On the 1925 Iowa State Census of Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., Iowa, Herman Hodges appears with his wife, Lydia and their children Rachel and LeRoy. Rachel is noted as Hodges but should be Palmer. The boy, LeRoy is 8 years old and it is likely Herman's son from a previous marriage.

Unable to find an obituary for Herman, but this gives some information:
Rolfe Arrow, Rolfe, Iowa, Thursday, February 27, 1930, Page 1 Col. 3: Clarence and J. O. Hosier and their sister, Mrs. Frank Stearns of the Plover neighborhood, were called to Waterloo Friday by the death of their brother-in-law, Herman Hodges who passed away at a local hospital that day as a result of Ptomaine poisoning. Mrs. Hodges' daughter, Rachael Palmer, was also seriously ill with the same trouble, but is recovering. The Hodges lived on one of the Charlton farms north of Rolfe a few years ago.
