Idaho Spokesman-Review, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Saturday, October 20, 2001: Graveside service for Dorothy Irene Charles, 78, will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Pine Cemetery in Pine City, Wash. Memorial Mass will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in St. Maries. Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Charles, who was born in Sandpoint, died Wednesday. She grew up in Elk River, Idaho, and graduated from high school there in 1941 and married Ray Charles that same year. Mrs. Charles lived in various communities of the Pacific Northwest while following her husband's railroad career.
The couple settled in Malden, Wash., in 1976, and she was a homemaker. Mrs. Charles moved to St. Maries in 1988 and was active as a volunteer at Valley Vista Care Center and Hospice of Benewah County. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, fishing and solving crossword puzzles. Mrs. Charles was a member of the Benewah County Council on Aging, the Milwaukee Railroad Women's Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Her husband died in 1992. Survivors include four sons, Mike Charles and Tim Charles, both of St. Maries, and Pat Charles and David Charles, both of Rosalia, Wash.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Benewah County, 702 W. College, St. Maries, ID 83861.
