Edward John Shepherd

Edward John Shepherd was in the Army during World War II. He was in the Pacific Theater, seeing New Guinea, Japan and the Philippines. Service number 37 674 929, Technician Fourth Grade, 27th General Hospital. Separated at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas 16 February 1946. His separation Qualification Record states date of entry 3 Aug. 1943. Section for description --related civilian occupation reads-- Baker: Served overseas in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations for 22 months with the 27th General Hospital. Baked bread, pie, and other related products, such as rolls, cakes, and pastries in a fixed and mobile bakery. Requisitioned supplies and kept records on received supplies and work done.

He was drafted out of high school into the Army. He earned his GED in the summer and autumn of 1946 in Long Beach, California. He attended college at San Louis Obispo on the G.I. Bill. They were unable to live on the money given on the G. I. Bill, while at college, so he left and went to work at various bakeries in California. Lived in Vallejo and commuted by bus to Foster's Bakeries in San Francisco. He and his wife lived in Santa Rosa and Pittsburg, California before settling in Antioch. Worked 26 years for Fibreboard Paper Products the Wilbur Avenue Plant in Antioch, California. He was president of the Paper Makers Union #606 in 1951.

He loved to hunt deer and duck. He loved to fish for striped bass and built and used his own boat. He kept it at Sherman Island near Antioch. In 1967 he won an award for the second largest Striped Bass taken in California. He appeared on the front page of the Antioch Daily Ledger being given the award.

Antioch Daily Ledger, Antioch, California: Edward John Shepherd Sr., 52, died Monday in a Concord hospital. An Iowa native, Mr. Shepherd moved to Oakley 3 1/2 months ago after living in Antioch since 1950. He came to California in 1946. He had been a Fibreboard employee since 1951. Mr. Shepherd was a member of Western Pulp and Paper Makers Union Local 606, Martinez Gun Club and Brentwood Rod and Gun Club. He is survived by his widow Ila Jeanne Shepherd of Oakley; daughter Carol Kirkpatrick of Marysville; son Edward J. Shepherd, Jr., of Oakley; mother Elsie Medouse [Medaus] of Iowa; brothers Charles Floyd Shepherd of Colorado, and Richard Earl Shepherd of Iowa; sister Lucille Zolczynski of Iowa, and one grandson. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Antioch. Burial will be at Oak View Memorial Park in Antioch. The family prefers donations to the Edward John Shepherd Sr. Memorial Fund [at the church].

Diablo Medical Center in Concord, Cal. Services will be held July 14 at St. John's Lutheran church, Antioch, Cal. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, a daughter, Mrs. John Kilpatrick [Kirkpatrick], a son E. J. Jr., at home, a grandson, mother, a sister and two brothers. Survivors in Oelwein are his mother, Mrs. Elsie Medaus, a sister Mrs. Stan Zolczynski Sr., and a brother Dick.
