Sir William Henry Hornby D. L. J. P.
(29 Aug 1841 - 22 Oct 1928)
First Baronet of Brookhouse (Blackburn), one-time M.P. for Blackburn, of Whinfield and subsequently of Pleasington Hall, Blackburn. Educated privately. Entered R.N. aged 12 1/2, and served during the Crimean War as Naval Cadet in British Fleet despatched to the Baltic, 1855. Received Baltic Medal. Contested St. Paul's Ward, Blackburn, at Municipal Elections, Nov., 1868. Elected for St. Mary's Ward, Nov. 1873. Mayor of Blackburn, 1876. Subsequently Alderman. Chmn. of Blackburn Conservative Society, and leader in Town Council, 1874-86. Elected M.P. for Blackburn (unopposed), 1886, and represented the Borough until 1910. Chmn. of First School Board for Blackburn, 1871-86. Succeeded his father as a Director of Lancs. and Yorks. Railway. Also succeeded his father as owner of Brookhouse Cotton Mills. Joined Rifle Volunteers as Lieut., 1860; Retired as Major, 1879. Joint Founder and one-time Capt. of East Lancs. Cricket Club, (founded 1865). Created a Bart., 1 Jan., 1899. Freeman of Blackburn, 1903, having again been Mayor in Bourough's Jubilee Year (Coronation Year), 1901-02.
