"Merchant of Lodge Lane and Northumberland Terrace, Everton, Liverpool, subsequently of Druids Cross, Little Woolton, near Liverpool. Partner in the Mercantile firm of Messrs. H and J Hornby & Co. (see his elder brother Hugh Hornby, Esq.) An Alderman of Liverpool Corporation. Built in 1847 the mansion of Druids Cross. During his travels abroad in early life, Mr. Joseph Hornby kept a journal, which was later printed at the Ashendene Press of his grandson, Charles Harry St. John Hornby, Esq. (q.v.)"
