"Of Olive Mount, Wavertree, Liverpool, and formerly of Northumberland Terrace, Everton, and of Druids Cross, Little Woolton, Merchant. Educated privately at Rugby. Entered family business c. 1840. A player with Liverpool cricket club, and later Secretary. Subsequently Vice-President and Acting Chairman. Steward of Waterloo Cup Coursing Meetings. Joint-winner of Waterloo Cup with "Herschel", 1887. Founder-member of Liverpool Liberal Assocn. Founder-member of Liverpool Liberal-Unionist Assocn., 1886. J.P. (Liverpool), 1860, and (Lancs. - Kirkdale Petty Sessional Div.), 1862. Director of Royal Insurance Co. Member of Committee, Liverpool Royal Infirmary. Member, Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, 1862, (from 1862 to 1876 a member of the Docks and Quays Committee and the Traffic Committee, then a member of the Pty. Cttee., 1876). Chairman, Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, 1876-89. Recd. Prince and Princess of Wales at opening of Alexandra and Langton Docks, Bootle, 1881. Gave evidence as Dock Bd. Chmn. so select cttees. of House of Commons and House of Lords. Twice declined a knighthood. Member, Pilotage Cttee., 1881-87. Director, Liverpool Overhead Rly. Co. Hon Sec., Altcar Club. Died unmarried. The Hornby Dock in Liverpool was named after Mr. T. D. Hornby."
