Hugh Hornby Esq. J. P.

"Merchant of Sandown Hall, Wavertree, Liverpool. Settled as a merchant in Liverpool with his younger brother, Joseph Hornby, Esq., in 1825, as Messrs. H and J Hornby Co., Brunswick Street. Travelled extensively in early life in Russia and the Levant, and particularly in the Crimea/Black Sea vicinity, subsequently specializing in trade with Russia. A strong advocate, in a private capacity, of Mercantile representation on the Liverpool Dock Committee. Elected to represent Pitt Street Ward on Liverpool Corporation, 1835. Defeated 1841. Elected for Castle Street Ward, 1842. One-time Chairman, Liverpool Finance Committee. Mayor of Liverpool in 1838. J.P. (Liverpool and Lancs). Retired from public life, 1858. On his death had directed that his landed and other property be divided among his surviving children, with the exception of his Sandown Hall Estate, left to his widow for life."
