of Eton, and of Gale Cottage, Keswick, Cumberland, Headmaster and subsequently Provost of Eton College. Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford (B.A., 1849; M.A., 1851). Gained 1st. Class in classics, and rowed in Oxford Eight, 1849 and 1851. Fellow of B.N.C., 1849, then Principal of Bishop Cosin's Hall, Durham, before returning to B.N.C. in 1864, where he was Senior Proctor. Subsequently Sexcond Master at Winchester, 1867, whence he was appointed headmaster of Eton, 1868. Headmaster 1868-84. D.D., 1869. Provost of Eton College, 1884-1909. Hon. D.C.L., (Durham), 1882. Hon Chaplain to Queen Victoria, 1882, and to King Edward VII, 1901. C.V.O., 1904. A pioneer of Alpine climbing, and a member of the Alpine Club, 1864-1909.
