Of Littlegreen and of Lordington, Sussex. Educated at Winwick Grammar School, at Mr. Southwood's Preparatory School in Plymouth, and in R.N. Entered R.N., 1837, as 1st Class volunteer on H.M.S. Princess Charlotte. Present at bombardment of Acre, 1840. Served in H.M.S. Winchester, 1842-44; in H.M.S. Cleopatra, 1844-47; and as Flag-Lieut. to his father in H.M.S. Asia, 1847-51, having become Lieut., 1844, and Commander, 1850. Capt. 1852. On half-pay, 1853-58. At R.N. Coll., Portsmouth, 1857-58. In command of H.M.S. Tribune in China and at Vancouver Island, 1858-60. Under Sir William Fanshawe Martin in H.M.S. Neptune in the Mediterranean, 1861-62. Flag-Capt. to Rear-Adm. Sidney Colpoys Dacres in the Channer (H.M.S. Edgar), 1863-65. 1st Class Commodore on West Coast of Africa (H.M.S. Bristol), 1865-67. Rear-Adm., 1869. Commanded Flying Squadron, 1869-71. Commanded Channel Squadron 1871-74. 2nd Sea Lord of the Admiralty, 1875-77. Vice-Adm., 1875. C-in-C, Mediterranean Squadron, 1877-80.
