Notes
Baptism
St. Mary's Catholic Church is physically located in Hagerstown, but the church records show a "location" - I assume the Priest traveled to the communities performing the various rites.Census
The census shows "Williamsford" and not "Williamsport"Article/Document
In the article James is the young boy who almost drowns. He is on a canal boat with his father (Edward). It appears he would be abt 13 and working - probably driving the mule team.Military
There is one other James Hughes in Washington Co., Maryland in 1863 but he would have been closer to 45.It certainly appears this James Hughes is our Great Grandfather.
Occupation
Need to find the specific area James was the SuperintendentArticle/Document
One has to wonder why this would be newsworthy.A possible explanation is; as the Superintendent of the C&O Canal around Dam 5 (ie: Williamsport) anything that occurs to him becomes newsworthy.
Census
The 1900 census, line 5, shows the house number as 428, yet other documents from around the same time show the house number as 424.Another piece of interesting is the fact that James' occupation is shown as "clerk" - and he is the one providing the information, so you would assume he knows his occupation. Yet in the 1905 city directory he is shown as "foreman"
Occupation
1905 Baltimore City Directory shows James E Hughes as a foreman but, it does not indicate a companyBurial
The burial plot was purchased by Francis Hughes on 30-OCT-1922. Deed # 10640History and Roster of Maryland volunteers, war of 1861-5
