Patrick MONAHAN

(23 Apr 1890 - 10 Aug 1942)

There is an Ellis Island record for a Patrick: he arrived in New York on October 27, 1912, aged 22 having sailed on the 'Carmania' from Liverpool. His occupation is given as "telephone operator" and his contact name is given as Martin Monahan, his uncle, of 500 3rd Avenue, New York.

It is thought that Patrick went to the United States as an athlete, sponsored by a brewery in New York. According to his World War I registration card - every male of military age was required to fill one in - he was working as a bartender in 1917 in what looks like the "Opper Copper" at 320 Broadway in New York and lived at what appears to be 264 West 21st St. The card also tells us he was 5' 10" in height, of medium build, had grey eyes and brown hair.

The 1920 census tells us he and his family were living at 989 Amsterdam Avenue in New York (unfortunately his occupation on the census return is illegible). By the time of the 1930 census he and the family were living at 190 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx and Patrick was working as a detective in the police force.

Patrick died of cancer at the age of 52.
