Martin Joseph MONAHAN

(19 Mar 1915 - 29 Aug 1990)

Martin grew up in the Bronx in New York.

There is a record of the enlistment into the U.S. military on 12 March 1942 of a Martin J. Monahan, born in 1915, who may be our Martin above. According to the enlistment papers, this Martin was single, living in Suffolk, Massachusetts, was 5' 8" tall, weighed 147 lbs and had four years of high school education. Could this be our Martin?

According to the 1940 U.S. census Martin was a newspaper advertising salesman.

As a young man Martin had a catboat that he sailed on Long Island Sound. This was when he was still living in the family home on Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx. He had a friend named Tom Carew that he used to fish and sail with and, since one of Martin's grandmothers was a Carew, I am wondering if Tom may have been a relative, although Martin's son tells me that his father never mentioned that they were related.
