Individual Details
William Joseph MONAHAN
(13 Jun 1886 - 24 Nov 1918)
From family sources I have William's birth and death dates, as well as counties of birth and death. However, I have been unable to confirm any of this information. Nor can I find any trace of William in the 1911 census. He is listed in the 1901 census, when he was aged 14 and living with his family in Duncannon, Co. Wexford.
No record of William could be found in the 1911 census of Ireland but a Royal Navy seaman named William Monahan, born in Tipperary on 12 July 1886, is listed on board the HMS Cambrian in the 1911 census of England. The Cambrian was the flagship of the Australia station of the Royal Navy at the time and at midnight on 2 April 1911, given the latitude and longitude details provided, it was about 100 miles east of Sydney at the time. Despite the dates of birth not matching, it is possible that the William in the Royal Navy is our William.
