John H. Hoffpauir served as Postmaster of Pouppeville, St. Landry parish from 21 May 1866 to 31 Jul 1866. (L'Eglise du Marais Bouleur, 1872 to 1991 by Rev. Donald J. Hebert) Poupeville was originally known as Queue Tortue, a settlement near Bayou Que de Tortue. This settlement eventually came to be known as Rayne, in what was later to become Acadia Parish.
It may be that we are dealing with more than one person named John Hardy Hoffpauir living in this area in this time frame. More data is badly needed.

There is no mention of Ambrose Aramer or of Francois. Ambrose would have been about 12 at the time of this census, Francois about 15. There is a notation in Hebert's books for the birth record of Francois. I can find no record for the birth of Ambrose, and must conclude that Ambroise was not a member of this family.

This birth date is from a family Bible that I've not actually seen. The date is questionable because it follows too closely the suspected date of birth of Francois... however the birth date of Francois is also questionable.Endnotes
