Individual Details
James Edward "Jim" Hoffpauir
(19 Dec 1846 - 6 Aug 1925)
John Edward Hoffpauir was know as Grandpa Jim by his grandson Luther. Luther Hoffpauir remembers that Grandpa Jim was a great storyteller, often telling about the old times when they owned slaves.
My Aunt Susan, Ivy Hoffpauir's 2nd child, insisted that his middle name was Howard, not Edward. I must conclude from the evidence that he was named Edward, or at least his name was recorded as John E. when he married. John Edward is recorded as John J. in the 1860 census.
I recently met the caretaker of the Ebenezer cemetery, Bob Faulk. Bob also recalled John Edward Hoffpauir very clearly. He always called him Uncle Jim, so it's fairly certain that he was generally known as Jim. Bob remembers that he had a long beard, down to the middle of his chest, and that he loved to tell stories. Bob remembers most vividly that Uncle Jim told very scary stories..... and that they were all the more scary because of Jim's imposing appearance.
