Samuel Bertram Brown
(28 Apr 1885 - 26 Dec 1969)
He was a jeweler/stone setter in England, as was his father, and continued that occupation in Los Angeles working in the Jewelry Mart building on the north side of 5th St. west of Broadway until he retired. The family lived at 213 S. Ynez Ave., Monterey Park for many years up to Sam's death. His cremated remains are buried in the Bresee plot in Evergreen Cemetery.
1969 death is based on a copy of the death certificate which confirms his birth date, parent's names, he was a widower and occupation as a self employed diamond setter.
1930 census shows him and his family at 213 S. Ynez Ave., Monterey Park living next to his brother, Harold D. Brown, at 201 S. Ynez Ave. and his mother, Eliza Brown, at 129 S. Ynez Ave. During the period between 1916 to 1930 the street numbers were changed. These addresses were all next to one another.
1926 he was a witness on the Petition for Naturalization for Annie Bayliss, wife of Ernest Bayliss. He was living at 213 S. Ynez Ave., Monterey Park and a diamond setter. The location was the same as shown below but homes on the street had a new number system.
1920 census shows him age 34 (born 1886) a stone setter living at 2801 Ynez Ave., Monterey Park, CA with wife Louisa age 32 and two children. His mother was living at 2733 Ynez.
1917 he filed a petition for Intention to be a citizen on 18 April 1917, and then on 2 July 1917 he was admitted as a citizen.
1916 May 29 the city of Monterey Park was formed. The following family members were all living on Ynez Ave. at the time: Samuel Bertram Brown at 2801 Ynez Ave.; Harold T. Brown at 2737 Ynez Ave.; and Archie Brown and their mother, Eliza Brown, at 2733 Ynez Ave.
1912 he filed his Declaration of Intention to become a US citizen on 29 Oct. 1912, in the Los Angeles Superior Court.
1910 he came to USA via S.S. Tunisian departing from Liverpool, England and arrived in Quebec, P.Q., Canada on 8 July 1910, then on Grand Truck RR arrived in Windsor, Canada to cross the U.S. border into Detroit, Michigan on 9 July 1910. Then on to Souther California.
1909 birth certificate for his daughter, Grace K., shows they were living in West Bromwich, Birmingham, Staffordshire in April 1909. His mother, Eliza, who is a widow as of July 1909, came to the USA, arriving in California in Sept. 1909. She was traveling with her sons, Archie and Harold.
1908 marriage date is from a Certified Copy of an Entry of Marriage from the UK General Register Office. He was living at 207 Bracebridge St., Birmingham. Jane Bresee Fergus, his grand daughter, has their wedding ring which has an engraved date of marriage of April 1909. His brother, Arthur, emigrated to California in Sept. 1908.

1891 census shows him as age 5 (born 1886) and living with his parents in Birmingham. His father is a jeweller born in Coventry and he was born in Birmingham.
1894 his mother's brother, Samuel Thomas Stagg, came to Los Angeles and may have been the first in the family to come here.
