Individual Details
Johann Martin BATDORF
(Abt Jan 1695 - Aft 8 Apr 1769)
Martin bought 329 acres on 2 November 1739 from Casper Wister, button maker of Philadelphia. This land would have been in Lancaster County at that time but a deed was never recorded there. This land was eventually divided among three of Martin's sons: Hermanus (his children), George Peter, and Martin Jr. Martin, Sr. and his wife Mary Elizabeth transferred 88 acres of this land to Hermanus' children on 8 April 1769. Although this deed was never recorded, there are releases from several of Hermanus' children to their brother Peter for this land between 1775 and 1780 in Lancaster County. These deeds recite the purchase of the property from Casper Wistar on 2 November 1739 and the transfer of 88 acres from Martin and his wife to their grandchildren on 8 April 1769. An original indenture on sheepskin dated 14 July 1763 from Martin Battorff and Maria Elisabeth, his wife, of the Township of "Hydelburg", Lancaster County to Martin Battorff, Junior, son of Martin Battorff, Sr., for 129 acres was listed for sale on Ebay in January, 2002. It stated that this was part of the property purchased from Caspar Wistar on 2 November 1739. There is no deed recorded in Lancaster County for this indenture.
Martin also purchased 443 acres in Bethel Township, Berks County sometime prior to 1766 from Thomas Freame or his estate for 186 pounds but never received a deed of conveyance from him or his estate. Thomas Freame's daughter, Philadelphia Hannah conveyed a deed for 443 acres to Martin Battorff on 7 August 1766. Martin had purchased this land from Thomas Freame or his estate but Thomas Freame died about 1741 and his estate could not be settled until his daughter Hannah became 21 years of age. Martin sold/transferred this property to two of his other sons, Christian and Henry, and to a grandson Martin. His grandson Martin was a son of Martin, Sr.'s deceased son, John Adam. Martin, Sr. sold/transferred 157 acres to his grandson Martin on 7 October 1766. This deed is recorded in Berks County. His sons Christian and Henry supposedly received the rest with Christian receiving 160 acres. Deeds for the transfer to his sons Christian and Henry were never recorded in Berks County. However, the description of the land with adjoining landowners in the deed recording the transfer to his grandson states "thence by land granted or intended to be granted to Christian Badorff...thence by lands granted or intended to be granted to Henry Badorff..." Christian Batdorf leaves two tracts of land of 160 acres and 175 acres to his sons John and Benjamin as tenants in common in his will in 1781. Benjamin later transferred his interest in the 160 acre tract of land to his brother John in 1795. It is not known what happened to this 160 acre tract of land after that.
Confirmation records at Christ Lutheran Church in Berks County for Henry; Martin, Jr.; and Maria Elisabeth name Martin Batdorf as their father. A 1772 death record at Christ Lutheran Church for Martin's daughter, Maria Margreth gives her birthdate and her parents' names as Martin Battorf and Marie Elisabeth. A marriage record at Christ Lutheran Church for Georg Peter names Martin Battorf as his father.

However, the description of the land with adjoining landowners in the deed recording the transfer to his grandson states "thence by land granted or intended to be granted to Christian Badorff...thence by lands granted or intended to be granted to Henry Badorff..."Property
This is based on information in two other deeds in Berks County. The description of the land with adjoining landowners in the deed recording the transfer to his grandson, Martin Batdorf the Younger, states "thence by land granted or intended to be granted to Christian Badorff...thence by lands granted or intended to be granted to Henry Badorff..." (6:270 ). The deed from Jacob Lengel and Elizabeth his wife to John Batdorff (41:482) in the chain of title references the 142 acres that Henry Batdorff and his wife Anna Maria transferred to Christopher Batdorff.Endnotes
