Bartholomew RIBLET

(Abt Mar 1731 - Bef 23 Aug 1793)

According to family lore, Bartholomew moved to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland about 1787 with his younger children and his son, John and his family. The 1787 date is supported by John Riblet's pension papers since he states "I was thirty one years old when I removed to the State of Maryland near Hagerstown..." The 1787 date is also supported by a baptismal record at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland dated 22 July 1787 for the baptism of Johannes, son of Michael and Margretha Kelchner. Henrich Riblet was the sponsor. Margaret is a daughter of Bartholomew Riblet and Henrich is his son. Margaret with husband Michael and Henry are named as two of Bartholomew's heirs in a deed dated 25 February 1800 and recorded in deed book E, page 479 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Bartholomew supposedly moved to Bedford County after a fire destroyed his home near Hagerstown, Maryland. Christian Riblet states in an affidavit for his Revolutionary War pension that his discharge paper for his second period of Revolutionary War service (1779) was destroyed in a fire in his father's house three years after it was received. This would have been about 1782 and Bartholomew supposedly moved to Maryland about 1787. Was this the same fire?

He entered into an article of agreement to purchase 144 acres in Hopewell Township, Bedford County on 31 August 1792. He died sometime before 23 August 1793 when his son, John Riblet, was appointed as administator of his estate.

According to Catharine's tombstone, she was the mother of 13 children but the names of only nine of them can be documented. Eight of the children are named in a deed for property that Bartholomew owned at the time of his death and a baptism record exists for Bartholomew and Catharine's daughter, Anna Elizabeth. This daughter is not named in the deed. Although Bartholomew's wife, Catharine, was living in 1800 (if the date of her death on her tombstone is correct), she is not named in the deed.

Undocumented family trees attribute the following children to Bartholomew and Catharine but no documentation can be found to support that they had these children: Reuben, Peter, Daniel, Casper, and Jacob.

There was an Abraham Riblet living in Lancaster County that received a Revolutionary War pension but he is not the son of Bartholomew and Catharine.
