John Young Sr
(Abt 1744 - 17 Dec 1835)
LIFE
A. He arrived to Hawaii with the English ship Eleanor approximately February 1790, at a little more than 46 years of age. One day we went alone to explore the island. As it became dark, Kamehameha stopped him from returning to the ship and invited him to remain with him as a friend. He handled Kamehameha's canons (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 145-146). He was befriended by Kamehameha in March, 1790 (Fornander, An Account of the Polynesian Race, vol 2 p 322).
B. He had little education. He was very helpful to the missionaries when they sought residence in the 1820s (Restarick, John Young of Hawaii, an American, p 25-43).
C. Order of mates (Hawaiian Chiefs Biographical Abstract)
D. He was designated governor of Maui after the islands were united (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 184).
