Kristian Hansen Bjugstad

(17 Sep 1851 - 29 Sep 1940)

Cemetery location from Carole Bjugstad: The cemetery is in an area we call the sand hills and the road winds in around the hills. In my mind the best way to approach this is to find your way to Highway 27 which passes thru Lisbon. There is a road which is east of Lisbon (known ;as the Sheldon road and is marked ) which will take you north. About four miles north on this road is where my brother-in-law Charles lives. If you should happen to come this way, stopping there and having them take you there might be the easiest. Otherwise you could try to find it by going north from 27 six miles and turning east . You will travel as far east as you can and then you need go to the right at the fork. Just keep winding around the hills. This is the best I can do - I tend to get lost down there. Charles phone number is (701) 882-3440.

In June 1998, Jim Winsness received the family history of the Bjugstad family in Norway from Kjell Wedding - all of the previous generations history came from his generous work. He also provided the following:
"
The name Bjugstad is a name of a place or farm - the name means Bjug’s place (Bjug is a male name used from the Viking age and up to recently a few places in Norway. In "Vardal Bygdebok" - a book describing the history, farms and families in the community Vardal (now a part of the town Gjøvik near the lake Mjøsa in Norway) - I found some information about one Christian Hansen Bjugstad. In another book; "Emigration to America" (a Norwegian book) I found the same person:

Christian Hansen Bjugstad, worker, born 1851 (son of farmer Hans Johannesen and Guri Olsdatter Nedre Bjugstad) went with [the ship] "Kong Bjørn" [King Bjorn] April 24. 1880 to Red Wing. The ticket: kr 190,- Bringing kr 200,-.

If you can prove that YOUR Christian came over to America in May(?) 1880 with this ship, this MUST be the same Christian. He is not born in Christiania, but as far as I know American authorities often "made" Norwegian emigrants to be born the same place as the town they started their journey to America - and Vardal has no harbor as it is localized about 130 km north of Oslo. And Kong Bjørn traveled from Christiania (Oslo) to America in 1880.

The farm Bjugstad is mentioned first time 1604. Before 1620 the farm was divided in 2 smaller farms, later on more. One of the 2 farms was "Nedre Bjugstad" [Lower Bjugstad]. (The other farm was later divided: West and Middle Bjugstad.)."

Thanks Kjell!

From Cora Winsness: It was told that Augusta was Swedish and that when Christian married her, it was thought that he married below himself as the Norwegians didn't like Swedish people so they left the country to come to America. She added "best thing they ever did!"

From Charlotte Winsness:
Kristian Bjugstad was born September 17, 1851 in Norway, the son of Hans Johannessen and Guri Overby Johnannessen. Kristian secured a job on a ship leaving for America and ported at New York, and not wanting to go back to Norway jumped ship and headed west stopping at Red Wing, Minnesota. Kristian's older brother, Johannes (1848-1922) now has a grandson Johannes who Is the present owner and operator of the Bjugstad farm in Norway.
