== Biography == John was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland in 1739. In 1748. At age nine, he sailed with his family from Londonderry (ship not known) (saw one source listed the Amsterdam: have not been able to find), landing in Pennsylvania. His parents and three siblings died during the voyage. His sister Agnes also lived and later married Thomas Lackey, whose family also sailed on that ship. Thomas Lackey is also a Revolutionary War patriot. John married Martha McComb in Pennsylvania and they later moved to newly formed Rockbridge county, Virginia in 1778. They had eight children: Nathan, (who died young), David, John, Thomas, James, Agnes, Eleanor, and Martha. He married second, Jean Holeman. John is a DAR patriot. He died in February 1820 and was buried at the Oxford Presbyterian Cemetery in Collierstown, VA. His will proved in August of 1821.
Research Notes
:: Arrival records to Rockbridge County, 1778 by Morton
:: Land and tax supply records for Pennsylvania and Virginia:: Militia records archives: Pennsylvania listed as having signed up , but indicated as having moved before being called up.
:: The House of Ochiltree book p 306
:: The Cabells and Their Kin
:: Census records Federal while living in Virginia:: DAR records site military records of having been assigned but did not serve in Pa. I can find no records of him having served in Va. There was another John Leech who served in Va, but does not match his data.:: Will of John Leech (copy in the possession of Hart Wallace):: Church records of Old Oxford Presbyterian Church, (see Angela Ruley's records of cemeteries in Rockbridge County, VA).I was told by Don Leech, a son of Ellsworth Leech, a descendent of John Sr. that John's family owned a pub in Ireland, so they had money. Cannot confirm this. Don recently passed away, lived in Lexington Va.
