James Forbes, 2nd Lord Forbes was the son of Alexander Forbes, 1st Lord Forbes and Lady Elizabeth Douglas, only daughter of George Douglas, first Earl of Angus, and granddaughter of King Robert III. James of Forbes, as the son and heir apparent of his "derrest fadir, schir Alexander of Forbes, knycht", at Aberdeen on the last day of September, 1444, made it known to all men, "be this present writ becummys mane, til ane honorable and michti lorde Alexander of Setaune of Gordan, my redoutit lorde, for all the dayis of my lyfe, in tyme of wer and of pece, agayn all dedlyk myn alleigance til our souerane lord the Kyng alanerlyouttaine; in witnes af the quhilkis my sel is appensit"."JAMES OF FORBES, HIS BOND-1444", The Miscellany of the Spalding Club, IV, (Aberdeen, Scotland: Spalding Club, 1849), 179, Hathi Trust Digital Library (http://hdl.handle.net/2027/uc1.31175012165620?urlappend=%3Bseq=284 : 16 June).Paul: Volume 4, page 50 If he became a man on 30 September 1444, he was probably born 21 years earlier. His year of birth is based on this estimate. In exchange for this man rent he acquired a charter of Corsindawe, and other lands in the barony of Cluny.
He succeeded his father in 1448.Paul: Volume 4, page 50
In 1456 he received a licence from King James II. to fortify the Tower of Drymynour, commonly called Forbes, then the chief seat of the family, in the lordship of Forbes (Aberdeenshire).Paul: Volume 4, page 50
James married Egidia Keith, daughter of William de Keith, 1st Earl Marischal.Mosley, Charles, editor. Burke's Peerage, Baronetage & Knightage, Volume 1, page 1451.
He died between 20 September 1460, when he received a charter of lands of Tullireoth,in the barony of Cluny, and 30 July 1462, when his son was served heir.Paul: Volume 4, page 50

Family
He married Egidia, second daughter of William Keith, first Earl Marischal, who survived him, and was still a widow on 14 August 1473 when she appears in a charter of exchange.Paul: Volume 4, page 51 They had children:

* William Forbes, his eldest son and heir will become 3rd Lord Forbes.* Duncan Forbes, mentioned in the Acta Auditorum, 13 February 1491, as brother of the deceased William, Lord Forbes. He married Christian Mercer, daughter of the Laird of Ballief, Provost of Perth, widow of Gilbert Skene of that Ilk. He became ancestor of the Forbeses of Corsindae, and other families of the name, including Monymusk.* Patrick Forbes. Designed by his mother "our dearest sone" in the writ by her of 14 August 1473. He had a charter to Patrick Forbes, brother-german of William, Lord Forbes, of the King's lands, in the barony of O'Niel, viz. Coul, Kincraigy, and Corss, 10 October 1482. He became ancestor of Sir William Forbes of Craigievar, Bart., and of the Forbeses, Earls of Granard, in Ireland.* Alexander Forbes. Designed "our sone" by Lady Forbes on 14 August 1473, but nothing heard of him after.
* Egidia Forbes. She married Malcolm Forbes of Tolquhoun.
In the family history of the family of Skene of Skene there is notice of a daughter, likely to ahve been of James. Her name is provided as Agnes, who married Alexander Skene, Laird of Skene. She is stated to be a daughter of Lord Forbes. The family historian suggests that she was probably a daughter of James, 2nd Lord Forbes, and his Egidia Keith. Memorials of the family of Skene of Skene page 23 The date of the marriage is not provided. His eldest son, Alexander, is said to have attained his majority in 1514.Memorials of the family of Skene of Skene page 24 This suggests he was born c. 1590. Thus the year of marriage was c. 1589. For this to be a fact and as James Forbes died in 1462, she must have been born late in his life and estimated at c. 1460, to have been the mother of his children.

=== Note ===He declined to join with Earl Douglas against King James II in 1451. Earl Douglas was killed by the King in Stirling on 7 February 1452. John and son William participated in the battle of Brechin on 18 May 1452 with the King against the Earl of Crawford (principal confidant of the Douglasses). Success of the battle was credited in no small part to the Forbeses and their associates. A knight in 1444, before he ascended, he obtained a charter of the lands of Corsindae from Alexander Seton of Gordon. James may have accompaned Earl Douglas to Rome in 1450 to celebrate the Jubilee. He had a retour of Whitefield, 2 August 1452, to be held from the Earl of Angus for L5 yearly; instrument of sasine from Walter Stewart of Kinedward for the Earl of Ross and the isles, on the lands of Fintray; a charter of the lands of Tullyreoch in the Barony of Cluny, 20 September 1460, from Alexander, Earl of Huntly; and was appointed to Parliament in 1457, where he also sat as a Lord of Session for the Court of Justice.
