The bride was eleven years old and her groom was thirteen, their marriage formed the basis of a political alliance between France and Scotland.Tait, James. Because they were so young, the couple did not actually begin living together until July 1437. It does not appear to have been a happy relationship: historians have noted that Louis disliked her intensively from the moment of their first meeting,AEneas Silvius, ''Commentarii,'' p.163; Comines, ii.274, cited in Tait, James. One of the king's councillor's began spreading rumors that Margaret was unfaithful to Louis, and upset by this she became "melancholic," spending more and more time with girls of her own age and reading poetry. On 7 August 1445, while on a visit to a neighboring shrine, she took a chill which rapidly led to a fatal imflammation of the lungs.
Margaret Stewart, Dauphine of the Viennois, died 16 August 1445 (at the age of twenty) at Châlons-sur-Marne in Champagne, and was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Sépulcre in the church of the Abbey of Saint-Laon in Thouars (Vienne).
