John married [[Maxwell-364|Margaret Maxwell]], daughter of Robert Maxwell of Caerlaverock. They had the following three sons and three daughters:

* [[Montgomerie-91|Anne]]* [[Montgomerie-86|Janet]], was the second wife of [[Boyd-688|Thomas Boyd of Kilmarnock]]., also known as Joanna* [[Montgomery-648|Isabel]], married Archibald Mure of Rowallan.
''The Scots Peerage'' identifies a second wife [[Isles-14|Agnes of the Isles]]. He also identified Margaret Maxwell as a second but with a different father, Herbert Maxwell of Carlaverock.
By Agnes (who died before March 1413/1414), his first wife, three children are conclusively identified and two others are considered inconclusive.
