== Biography == Margaret Macdonald is the daughter of Alastair Macdonald, 10th Earl of Ross.
Margaret married Roderick MacLeod, 5th of the Lewes, son of Torquil MacLeod, 4th of the Lewes and Margaret MacNicol of Assynt. Her married name became MacLeod. The children of Margaret Macdonald and Roderick MacLeod, 5th of the Lewes
#Torquil MacLeod, 6th of the Lewes
#Tormod MacLeod
#Margaret MacLeod
This Profile refers to the wife of Roderick MacLeod, of Lewis.
Roderick is said[[#S-1]] R.C MacLeod; page 67 to have married Margaret, daughter of the Lord of the Isles. Matheson notices another marriage, to a daughter of John MacLeod of Harris, but he seems to confuse the reference as this is a marriage to a later Roderick.[http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~battle/baronage/page384.html Baronage of Scotland] There is also notice in the Vatican archives: “the nobleman Roderic MacLeord [sic], baron of Leows is granted an indult, dated 9th June 1405, to have a portable altar, and, in a papal document dated 27th May 1403, it is stated that “the nobleman Roderic Macleord had formerly been betrothed to Anna, daughter of the nobleman William Macleord” of Sodor (Isles and Highlands) diocese; it is not known whether this is this Roderick, the father, or his son, Roderick; it seems likely to have been his son.
===Parental Conjecture=== If he did marry a Margaret, daughter of the Lord of the Isles, as stated in R.C. Macleod's work, but questioned by Matheson, the question arises as to which Lord of the Isles the source refers to and when did the marriage occur? Their son, [[MacLeod-1012|Torquil]] led the clan at the [[:Category: Battle of Feorlig|Battle of Feorlig]] in 1402 against the Macdonalds and it must be supposed he was of age. If this was so he was born no later than 1380, and likely c. 1370 as is supposed on wikitree. If this is the case then the marriage must have occurred prior, assuming her to be the mother, and she likely born c. 1350. As the marriage between [[Macdonald-91|John Macdonald]], Lord of the Isles and his second wife, [[Stewart-556|Margaret Stewart]], occurred that year there is no certainty on which mother was hers.
If there is another original source that comes to light that provides the parental connection please inform the Profile Manager.
===Family===It has been assumed that "Margaret" was the mothr of all the children although this may not be the case. Roderick is known to have had three sons, at least:
* Torquil, who will inherit.
* Norman MacLeod, who becomes the first of the MacLeod of Assynt.
* Roderick MacLeod. There is a papal indult, dated 15th May 1403, granted to “Roderic Roderici Macliord, layman, Sodor diocese, to choose a suitable and discreet priest as his confessor in mortis articulo. (at the point of death) Matheson suggests it likely that this is a son of Roderick MacLeod, baron of Lewis. There is the notice, mentioned above, of a betrothal to Anna, daughter of William MacLeod, and it seems likely to have been this Roderick.
