He married, firstly, Egida Hay, daughter of Sir John Hay and Margaret Stewart, c 8 January 1426/7. His marriage to Egida Hay was annulled before 1438.
He married, secondly, Elizabeth Crichton, daughter of William Crichton of that Ilk, 1st Lord Crichton, before 18 March 1439/40.Cokayne, and others, The Complete Peerage, volume VII, page 121.
He was given the name of Alexander Seton at birth. Cokayne, and others, The Complete Peerage, volume VI, page 675.
He was created 1st Earl of Huntly between 30 October 1444 to 3 July 1445., In 1451 he had Crown grants of the territorial Lordship of Badenoch. He inherited from his grandmother, Elizabeth Keith, Aboyne, Cluny and Glenmuick, Aberdeenshire.
Circa 1457 his name was legally changed to Alexander Gordon.

The Seton family claim the son, Alexander, by his first wife kept the name of Seton, and that by his second wife he had four sons and four daughters, no other children are mentioned.

Alexander Gordon married first, c. 8 January 1426 Egidia Hay, daughter and heir of John Hay of Tullibody.[10] Together they had a son:Alexander Seton, ancestor of the Setons of Touch, and Abercorn; succeeded to his mother's lands.[10]He obtained an annulment to this marriage in 1438 in order to marry Elizabeth Crichton, daughter of William Crichton, the Chancellor of Scotland.[a][9] Alexander and Elizabeth had the following children:George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly, succeeded to the earldom and his father's lordships[11]

William Gordon[11]Margaret Gordon, before 9 November 1457 contracted to marry Nicholas Hay, 2nd Earl of Erroll but for some reason did not and married her sister Elizabeth.[11]Elizabeth Gordon (died 17 Apr 1500), married Nicholas Hay, 2nd Earl of Erroll, and then as his second wife John Kennedy, 2nd Lord Kennedy, and had issue by both husbands[11]Christian Gordon, married William Forbes, 3rd Lord Forbes, on 8 July 1468, and had issue[11]Lady Catherine Gordon, on 30 September 1461 she was contracted to marry Archibald (then aged 12), eldest son of George Douglas, 4th Earl of Angus but the marriage did not take place[12]Alexander Gordon had two additional children by a daughter of Cumming of Altyre, identified by her byname [[Cumming-1433|'the Fair Maid of Moray']] but there is no record of a marriage between them.[12] They were:
