Adam succeeded his grandfather, and was one of the Scottish Commissioners sent to England in 1423 to treat for the release of King James 1st from captivity. He was sent with others, in 1434, to take possession of the castle of Dunbar, belonging to the Earl of March; the charge of which after its surrender was confided to him by the King; a payment of £30 was made to him as Keeper of the castle by order of the King in 1435. He was present at the conflict at Piperden near Berwick on 10th September 1436 and was one of the conservators of a truce with England on 31st March 1438. He was styled Steward of the earldom of March on 1st January 1443/4.''The Scots Peerage'' by Sir James Balfour Paul, Edinburgh, 1905, 'Bothwell', pps:138/9, who makes no mention whatever of his spouse.
