: : This Patrick was obviously a favoured son. He received safe conducts from Edward the Third of England in 1363 to visit the Tomb of St. Thomas of Canterbury and again in 1364 to pursue his studies at Oxford University.
: : In the historical literature Fordun styled him "Miles magnanimus et athleta bellicosus'. With his father he greatly contributed to the Scottish victory at Otterburn in 1388.
: : He married firstly a daughter and coheiress of the family of Vaux, Lords of Direlton. They had three sons, Adam, William, and Archibald.
: : Direlton is virtually on the Firth of Forth coast six miles north of Haddington in East Lothian. The family of Vaux maintained a castle at Direlton.
: : Patrick married secondly, Dame Christian, Lady of Waughton. Dame christian later married Sir William Lindsay of the Byres. She was the daughter of William de Gourlay, maternal grandson of Sir William of Erth, Lord of Waughton. Patrick and Christian had two sons, Patrick and Alexander.
: : He was defeated and killed at Nisbet moor fighting the Percies, by the Earl of March who had turned traitor to his King and country. Hepburn, with the flower of the youth of East Lothian, fell in the battle, which took place on 22nd Jun 1402.
: : It is from this Patrick having had families to two wives that we see the family tree divide into the Hepburns of Hailes and the Hepburns of Waughton.
Patrick de Hepburn Known as the Younger of Hailes.
He married Beatrix de Vaux, daughter of William de Vaux, Lord Dirleton.
Patrick de Hepburn married Christian Gourlay, daughter of William de Gourlay and a Miss Mure, before 1388; This marriage is not in Scots Peerage.
Patrick de Hepburn died on 22 June 1402 at Battle of Nisbet Moor, West Nisbet, Berwickshire, Scotland
