Pier Luigi Farnese of Montalto

(1445 - 1487)

Pier Luigi was born about 1430, the son of Ranuccio Farnese, conte di Pitigliano, and Agnese Monaldeschi. He succeeded his father as captain-general of Orvieto, and devoted his life to military exploits in the service of the Church. He seems to have conceived the role of his family in a new light, perhaps at the instigation of his Roman aristocrat wife Giovanella Caetani, daughter of Onorato III Caetani and Caterina Orsini, whom he had married in 1461. During his lifetime the Farnese began to emerge from relative provincial obscurity and to build for posterity. His three sons and two daughters with Giovanella would all have progeny. Their son Alessandro would become Pope Paul III.

The construction of the first great Palazzo Farnese was begun by Pier Luigi beside the cathedral of Viterbo. He also founded a monastery on an island in Lake Bolsena, and created there a family tomb for the burial of his father, who had died in 1449. Pier Luigi died about 1488.
