Count Ranuccio Farnese of Pitigliano
(Abt 1380 - 1449)
Ranuccio was born about 1380, the son of Pier Farnese and Pantasilea Dolci. With his wife Agnese Monaldeschi he had two sons and two daughters who would have progeny.
Ranuccio learned the profession of arms from his father. He succeeded his father in commanding the Sienese army, and then became captain-general of the papal army at Orvieto.
By force of arms and political skill, he managed to create a small 'state' out of the original Farnese feuds. However, in terms of historical importance his great achievement lay in arranging the marriage of his sons with two of the four families which in the Middle Ages had contested Rome: Pier Luigi married Giovanella Caetani, daughter of the lord of Sermoneta and descendant of the family of Pope Boniface VIII; and Gabriele Francesco married Isabella Orsini. Ranuccio died in 1449.
