Count Eitel Friedrich Hohenzollern-Hechingen

(7 Sep 1545 - 16 Jan 1605)

Eitel Friedrich was born in Sigmaringen on 7 September 1545, the son of Karl I, Graf von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and Markgräfin Anna von Baden-Durlach. On 22 June 1568 he married Gräfin Veronika von Ortenburg, daughter of Karl I, Graf von Ortenburg, and Maximiliana von Fraunberg zum Haag. Veronika died in 1573 without progeny, and on 14 November 1574 in Messkirch Eitel Friedrich married Gräfin Sibylle von Zimmern, daughter of Froben Christoph, Graf von Zimmern, author of the Zimmern Chronicle, and Gräfin Kunigunde von Eberstein. They had two sons and two daughters of whom Johann Georg and Johanna would have progeny. Sibylle died in 1599 and on 1 March 1601 Eitel Friedrich married Gräfin Johanna von Eberstein, daughter of Otto, Graf von Eberstein in Boldrungen, and Freiin Felicitas Colonna von Völs. This marriage did not result in progeny.

Eitel Friedrich studied with the Jesuits at the University of Dillingen and in Bourges. He then probably entered the service of the Bavarian Duke Albrecht V. For his entire life he remained close to Albrecht's son Wilhelm V. He ruled the territory of Hohenzollern-Hechingen from 1576, the year of division of his father's lands, until his death.

Eitel Friedrich vigorously rejected the Protestant teaching in his small territory, and worked tirelessly to push back the encroachment of Württemberg on it. He was the new founder of the Dominican abbey of Rangendingen, which had been abandoned earlier in the 16th century. Encouraged by Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria he established a Franciscan abbey near the former parish church of St.Luzen in Hechingen. He also built a four storey residential castle in the Renaissance style in Hechingen.

Eitel Friedrich died on 16 January 1605. His heart was buried in the minster of St.Luzen. The bronze commemorative plaque in the Chapel of St.Anthony there carries the epigraph: 'Ubi thesaurus meus, ibi cor meum' (For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also - Luke 12, 34).
