Prince Johann Georg I Hohenzollern-Hechingen

(1577 - 28 Sep 1623)

Johann Georg was born in Hechingen in 1577, the son of Eitel Friedrich I, Graf von Hohenzollern-Hechingen, and his second wife Gräfin Sibylle von Zimmern. On 11 October 1598 in Hechingen he married Gräfin Franziska von Salm, Wild- und Rheingräfin in Neufville, daughter of Graf Friedrich I von Salm, Wild- und Rheingraf in Neufville, and his first wife Gräfin Franziska von Salm. They had fifteen children of whom two sons, Eitel Friedrich II and Philipp, and five daughter would have progeny.

In 1620 Felipe III, king of Spain, made Johann Georg a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

In the Reformation the Swabian line of the house of Hohenzollern, unlike the Hohenzollerns of the electorate of Brandenburg, had remained Catholic on the principle of 'Cuius regio, eius religio' ('Whose realm, his religion') confirmed at the 1555 Peace of Augsburg establishing the coexistence of the Catholic and Lutheran religions in the Holy Roman Empire. The adjoining and far larger dukedom of Württemberg was a Protestant stronghold, and the Swabian Hohenzollern counties were in an exposed position in the dispute between the two faiths which was rapidly coming to a head. In the Thirty Years War they therefore bound themselves closely to the dukedom of Bavaria, the forerunner of the Catholic League. The alliance with the Bavarian duke Maximilian I and the Catholic emperor Ferdinand II brought its reward. After Bohemia was crushed in 1623 and Bavaria rose from a dukedom to an electorate, the Swabian Hohenzollerns were also rewarded with a rise in rank. The Diet of Regensburg on 28 March 1623 recognised Johann Georg and his cousin Johann, Graf von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, as mainstays of the house of Habsburg and the Catholic League, and elevated them both to the hereditary rank of Prince of the Empire (Reichsfürst).

Johann Georg died in Hechingen on 28 September 1623. His line would die out in 1869 with Friedrich Wilhelm, Fürst von Hohenzollern-Hechingen.
