Count Karl I Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen
(1516 - 18 Mar 1576)
Karl was born in 1516 in Brussels, the son of Eitel Friedrich III, Graf von Hohenzollern, and his first wife Johanna van Witthem. On 11 February 1537 in Pforfzheim he married Markgräfin Anna von Baden-Durlach, daughter of Ernst, Markgraf von Baden-Durlach, and his first wife Markgräfin Elisabeth von Brandenburg-Ansbach. They had fifteen children of whom four sons and two daughters would have progeny.
Karl was counsellor the emperors Charles V, Ferdinand I and Maximilian II. He was imperial treasurer and later the president of the imperial court council. In 1534 Charles V, who was his godfather, granted him the counties of Sigmaringen and Veringen.
Karl died in Sigmaringen on 18 March 1576. With his death the lands of the house of Hohenzollern, which he had held undivided since the death of his cousin Jost Nikolaus II, were split among his four surviving sons. The four lines emerging were Hohenzollern-Hechingen for his eldest son Eitel Friedrich IV, Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen for Karl II, Hohenzollern-Haigerloch for Christoph (which would expire in 1634 and pass to Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen) and a fourth line which expired in 1622 with the death of Karl's grandson Joachim Georg, the son of Joachim. The Hechingen line would expire in 1869 and also pass to Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.
