Duke Ernst I (The Iron) of Austria

Ernst was born in 1377 at Bruck an der Mur, the third son of Leopold III, duke of Austria, and Viridis (Verde) Visconti. He belonged to the junior, Leopoldian line of the House of Habsburg. At about 14 he was married to Margaretha of Pomerania, but she died without children in 1407. In an age of arranged marriages, Ernst, so tough that he was known as the 'Iron Duke', fell passionately in love with the woman who was to become his second wife, the Polish Cimburka of Masovia, daughter ot Ziemowit IV, duke of Masovia, and Alexandra of Lithuania. He married her in 1412 aged about 35, when she was between 15 and 18 years of age. They had nine children of whom two daughters and their son Friedrich, the future Emperor Friedrich III, would have progeny. Ernst died at Bruck and der Mur on 10 June 1424.
