George W. Leisher

Rev. G. W. Leisher was a son of David Minnich (b. 8/12/1808) and Anna Marie (Burkholder) Leisher of Guilford Township, Franklin County.

G. W. Leisher prepared for college at the Chambersburg Academy and entered Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg as a Junior in 1854, graduating in 1856.

Subsequently he taught: Allentown Seminary, Loysville Academy, Chambersburg and Germantown (Perry County). He was then principal of the Loysville Academy, Markelsville Academy, High School, Petersburg (now Duncannon), Greason Academy, Boalsburg.

On January 3, 1860, he married Catherine Rice in Loysville, Perry County. Rev. G. M. Settlemoyer, pastor of the Loysville Lutheran Charge performed the ceremony.

They had seven children. Besides those listed below they were: William Loy (b. 11/6/1862, d. 1/13/1942); Union Victor (b. 5/15/1865, d. 10/22/1936); Charles Albert (b. 4/7/1867, d. 12/22/1935); John Edgar (b. 2/25/1870, d. 1/29/1938), Luther L. (b. 10/27/1873, d. 3/7/1947) and Rose Catherine Hippard (b. 6/8/1885, d. 7/4/1950).

He studied theology privately and was licensed to preach by the Lutheran Synod in 1872. He entered the Pittsburgh Lutheran Synod in 1873 and his first call was to the Fayetteville Lutheran Church.

From there he served the Kittanning Lutheran Charge, Manorville, Armstrong County, and then to the McAlisterville Charge in Juniata County in 1885.

In 1892, he came to the Marysville Lutheran Charge in Perry County and later that year, he was elected president of the Central Pennsylvania Evangelical Lutheran Synod. In 1893, he resigned at Marysville and moved down the road and became pastor of the Blain Charge.

From there he served in Centre County and Jefferson County before accepting a call to a mission church, Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo. Finally, he served the Upper Bermudian Lutheran Charge in Adams County.

He retired in 1908 and he and Catharine moved to Cleveland, Ohio. At the time of his death, they resided with his son, Dr. Charles A. Leisher.

Their tombstone is inscribed, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith."
