John Porterfield Rumery, a former Oshkosh man and member of a pioneer Oshkosh family, died Saturday morning at 11:30 o'clock at his home, 360 East Garfield boulevard, Chicago. He had been in failing health, due to his advanced age, since early in November.
A sister, Mrs. Charles A. Wakeman, Oshkosh, and a nephew, Milton F. Rumery, and his wife, were with him at the time of his demise.
Mr. Rumery was born at Bailleyville, ME, Nov. 6, 1853. His father Lyman O. Rumery, came to Oshkosh in 1853 and returned east the next year and brought his wife and two children, one of them being the deceased, to this city.
Mr. Rumery attended local schools and as a young man was associated with his father in the lumbering business. He went to California as a young man, but returned to Oshkosh after a short time in the west, and from here moved to Chicago where he had lived for a number of years.
He was married at Chicago to Miss Mary Howard in 1887. She preceded him in death, passing away in 1911.
Mr. Rumery is survived by four sisters, Miss Carrie Rumery, Oshkosh; Mrs. Charles Wakeman, Oshkosh; Mrs. J. Howard Clement, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Francis G. Underwood, Milwaukee. A sister, Mrs. Louis Gunnell, Arlington, NJ died last October.
Funeral services are to be held at Chicago Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock. Interment will be at a cemetery in that city.
