James Nelson Ivy was born in Tennessee on December 15, 1856. The family moved to south Texas where he married and had five children. This family came with him to the Panhandle in 1888 to live on the "80" Ranch, which was located about fifteen miles north of the old town of Liberty, New Mexico. They rode the first passenger train from Fort Worth to Tascosa. The family then moved to Deaf Smith County, near the old county seat La Plata. Four children survived; Mora, Bill, Bertie and Myrtle. James and his first wife were divorced in the early 1890's.
James then married Susie Slaughter on October 28, 1894 in Amarillo, Texas. They moved to James' homestead south of Vega, just north of the present day Oldham County Country Club. James and Susie had nine children Roy, Ruby, Brian Guy, Horace, Glen, Berniece, Earnest and John. James was one of the five founders of the original Vega town site, the others being the Landergin Brothers, Albert Wiseman, Mr. Robertson and Mr. Holloway. He owned and operated the first water works in the Vega town site and along with Mr. Gene Duncan, built the first phone service in Vega. He served as a school trustee and was one of the first directors of the First State Bank. The Ivy's also owned and operated the Grapevine Ranch west of Adrian. They would live on the ranch in the summer and in Vega in the winter, when the children had to be in shcool. He was a charter member of the Vega Methodist Church and the Vega Masonic Lodge. James also served as Oldham County cattle inspector for a few years.
James suffered a stroke while working for the Matador Cattle Company and he never fully recovered, spending the remaining years of his life in a wheelchair. James died in 1933. James and Susie Ivy were both laid to rest in the Vega Cemetery.
