Following from the Greenwood County History Book
John H. Ivey, eldest of a family of eight children, escorted his mother, brothers and sisters to Kansas in a covered wagon shortly after the end of the Civil War, coming from Morristown, Tennessee. Settling the family near Paola, Kansas, he made his way to Texas, where he rode with the Texas Rangers for several years. Returning to Kansas, he "proved up" on a claim three miles directly west of the Fall River, where the town of Fall River now stands.
Most of his life was spent here. No trees grew in this country, as they do now; so after selecting his house site a few years later, he went to the Fall River, dug cottonwood saplings, and surrounded the yard by them.
Married three times, he reared two sons and five daughters, some of whom preceded him in death.
His love of excitement, challenge and horseflesh led him to establish a race track approximately a half mile west of the home site, a track which was enjoyed by many for a period of time.
He spent a few years in the town of Fall River, where he and a brother-in-law operated a meat market in the east part of town. This was one of twenty some businesses in this small town. While here he acted as city marshal
and was an active leader in the Democratic Party. He also served the community as U.S. marshal and game warden for years.
He rests among loved ones in Mt. Zion Cemetery, one he helped establish and care for years.
The first house built (after the log cabin) still stands, and is occupied by his youngest daughter. Another daughter, grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren reside in the community of Fall River and are active boosters of the town.
