Susie Slaughter was born in Montgomery County, Missouri on September 25, 1875. Her family moved to Kerrville, Texas when she was three months old. They later moved near Roswell, New Mexico. Susie often told that as a child she knew Billy the Kid and remembered seeing him at Fort Sumner. She also stayed with Pat Garrett and his family to go to school in Lincoln, New Mexico.
She married William Ellis at Nogales, Lincoln County, New Mexico on February 16, 1893. They were married at 2:30 in the afternoon and that night Mr. Ellis was killed in a gun fight in a Fort Sumner saloon. He had been called to the saloon to see about his brother who had been in a fight and needed help. When Mr. Ellis opened the door to the saloon he was shot and killed.
Susie "Slaughter" Ellis then married James Nelson Ivy on October 28, 1894 in Amarillo, Texas. They moved to James' homestead south of Vega, just north of the present day Oldham County Country Club. James and Susie had nine children Roy, Ruby, Brian Guy, Horace, Glen, Berniece, Earnest and John. The Ivy's were charter members of the Vega Methodist Church and she was also a member of the Eastern Star. James and Susie Ivy were both laid to rest in the Vega Cemetery.
