David SHONTZ

(28 FEB 1844 - 16 JUN 1885)



At the outbreak of the Civil War, at the age of 16, David enlisted in Co. G, 5th PA Reserves with his brothers Christian and Jonas. He fought in the Seven Days Battle at Richmond, Second Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Mine Run, Gettysburg, and The Wilderness. At The Wilderness, his brother William was killed, and he and his brother Christian were captured by the enemy, but then rescued by the Union troops. After three years, he re-enlisted in the 205th P. V. I. He was a first sergeant in Co. D and was at Petersburg at the fall of the city.
