Rev. Jonas B. SHONTZ

(13 MAY 1837 - 15 NOV 1914)



Jonas enlisted in Co. G, 5th PA Reserves, June 21, 1861, and fought in battles of Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill, Charles City Crossroads, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. He was discharged June 21, 1864.
With the continuing need for more troops, Jonas then assisted in raising a company and was commissioned first lieutenant of Co. D, 205th P. V. I. on September 2, 1864. He commanded his company in the battle of Fort Steadman on March 25, 1865, and in the charge on Fort Mahone on April 3, 1865. He was with the Army when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
