Stephen STUDEBAKER

(ABT 17 SEP 1824 - 15 JUN 1894)

From "The Studebaker Family in America - 1736-1976"; by Walter CARLOCK, Alvin Girard FAUST and E. Irene MILLER; 1976; page 182:
"Stephen had lived in Delaware Co., IN as a quit claim in 1846 mentions him and the 1850 census lists his small family there at that time. One child, Lydia, was born in Illinois when the wagon train passed through that state. The census records show Lydia born 1855 in IL., but members of the family believe the "Ulrich Party" came to Kansas in 1854.

'The first permanent Church of the Brethren in Kansas, the Washington Creek Church, was organized in 1858 in Stephen's log house in Douglas County about two years after he had moved his family to Kansas.
'Marvin STUDEBAKER's research gives us the following:
'As founders of the first permanent Brethren Church in Kansas, Stephen & Daniel undoubtedly held to high and strict standards of parental control. Several Annual Conferences of the church were held in the community and the proceedings are available in published works. From these one can glean a quite comprehensive insight into day-to-day Brethren living.
'It is necessary to mention this leadership in Tunker or Brethren affairs because it explains viewpoints and customs alien to modern life as experienced by most STUDEBAKERS. For most of us, Tunker life is but a thing our grandparents spoke of on occasion.
'Many reports of happenings in Kansas are to be found in various church publications and the STUDEBAKERS are mentioned often. This of course, is in keeping with their role as religious leaders in the community, but there was a close family tie as well. "The Gospel Visitor", most widely read of the Brethren publications, was edited by James QUINTER, whose wife was a daughter of John STUDEBAKER, Stephen and Daniel's brother. The issue of 4 AUG 1964 carries a letter which reads in part:
"...on our way to the home of Brother ULRICH, we stopped a little at the house of Daniel STUDEBAKER, who has been chosen to the ministry, if we mistake not, since he has removed to Kansas. We also conversed with his brother, Stephen STUDEBAKER, engaged on his farm a little distance from our road".
'In the period 1880-85 the Tunker Church split down the middle nation-wide on the question of social and theological change. The small Douglas Co., congregation was no exception. It appears that the immediate cause was a bright red buggy which Stephen one day drove to church. Ordered to sell the rig or paint it orthodox black, he refused and was summarily expelled from the church which he had started in his own living room. Details of this can be found in the published minutes of the Church's general meetings, still in print.
'It appears that Susan elected to remain in "the old order" and that as a consequence she and all others were obliged to "shun" Stephen unless he again submitted to complete church control. He never did and they apparently lived apart on the same farm until Stephen died in 1894; Susan survived him until 1912. Cruel though it is, this story must have been repeated in some aspect in a thousand homes occupied by quiet, loving, God-fearing Brethren."
