John Wesley STUDEBAKER

(1787 - 20 JAN 1833)

From "The Studebaker Family in America - 1736-1976", by Walter CARLOCK, Alvin Girard FAUST and E. Irene MILLER; 1976; page 161:
"John moved to Ohio after his father's death. The records are scant and vary with one another. "The Miami Valley History" states that David, John and Abraham STUDEBAKER came to Ohio about 1812-13, while the "History of the Church of the Brethren" by Wenger says 1816 in one place and 1818 in another. The first deeds to this branch are to his mother, Mary STUDEBAKER, on JAN 18, 1820. His son, George W., b. 1818 is said to have been born in Bedford Co., PA. The only true statement we can make is that he was a pioneer in Miami Co., Ohio. He purchased 163 acres of land from Daniel KNOPP APR 2, 1828 for $500. He purchased another 79 acres from Wm. D. YOUNG for $260 in 1829 which he sold in 1831 for $325. In DEC 1831, he again invested in 79 acres that he purchased from George P. SAVAGE for $130.
'He made his will APR 23, 1832, with a codicil on JUN 15, so he must have had a period of poor health before his death. The will was recorded MAY 4, 1833 and in it he names wife, Hannah; sons, Samuel & Jacob; daughter, Mary, wife of Eli GUMP. All other children share equally. Executors...sons, John and David. Codicil lists daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Joseph GNODLE; son, Samuel, received the farm called the Knoop place; Jacob, a farm in Cincinnati district; other children to receive their choice of lots in Shelby Co., Ohio.
'On FEB 1, 1834 Hannah STUDEBAKER appeared in court to acknowledge the correctness of an Estate Inventory which had been made MAY 6, 1833 by the appraisers: David LANDIS, Samuel HENDRICKS & William HUGHS.
'On AUG 27, 1839 Hannah STUDEBAKER sold the farm to Abraham STUDEBAKER, her late husband's brother, for $1,000. This was the NW Quarter of Sec. 22, Twp. 2 and range 9, Bethel Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. The next owner was Abraham's son, Samuel Steele STUDEBAKER (wife Nancy FRANTZ), and then to their daughter, Susan, wife of Elder Jacob COPPOCK.
'By 1840 Hannah, with a number of her younger children, had moved to Union Twp., Delaware Co., Indiana. Here, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews, she lived out her interesting life. Only after all her children were married and settled did she marry again. This was AUG 9, 1850, at which time she married Elder Benjamin BOWMAN (2-4-1785 - 2-21-1856). The "History of the Mississinewa Church of the Brethren" by Ralph G. RARICK, 1917, says of her: "She was truly a mother in Israel, never weary of extending the hand of charity, and administering to the needy." From 1850 to the date of her death, NOV 18, 1862, she was known as "Granny BOWMAN" by her neighbors and fellow adherents in the "Old Church on the River". She is buried next to Elder Benjamin BOWMAN in the Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Delaware Co., Indiana."
