Individual Details
David STUDEBAKER
(29 OCT 1814 - 2 AUG 1863)
From "The Studebaker Family in America - 1736-1976"; by Walter CARLOCK, Alvin Girard FAUST and E. Irene MILLER, 1976; page 181:
"David grew up in Dunker influence, his father being a 'Visiting Brother' under the able leadership of Elder Christian FRANTZ, who had the oversight of this area. He made a living at farming and held part ownership in a mill. There, as early as 1834, they processed sorghum molasses.
' In 1835 there was an immigration of STUDEBAKERs to Delaware Co., IN, and in 1844 David purchased land on the Mississinewa River where he erected another mill. In 1843 he was elected to the ministry in the newly organized Mississinewa Church. John YOUNCE of western Miami County, Painter Creek District, was the first elder there.
'In 1850 David was sent as a messenger to Annual Meeting in the Bear Creek District, Dayton, OH. There were 12 sub-committees that year, and 'David STUDEBAKER' served on the 4th. In 1855 he, with his wife and family, returned to Miami Co., OH. The Hickory Grove House had been erected in 1854, and at this time there were 80 members. David was soon ordained and given the oversight. He was an able leader, unassuming and much respected. For a living he farmed and conducted a lime-burning business.
'David died from lockjaw which had developed after running a nail into his foot. Catharine died soon after her second marriage to Samuel MURRAY. This family seems to have been hard hit by death at relatively early ages."
From "The Brethren Encyclopedia"; 1984; Volume 3; page 1786; loaned to compiler by the Brookville, OH Historical Society:
" STUDEBAKER, David; 10-29-1814/8-3-1863; adv. Hickory Grove, OH; Miami, OH; Mississinewa, IN (1843); "S. Ohio" (1920) 134, 575; "Indiana" (1952) 201; M. MILLER, "Roots by the River" (1973) 214-15; "GV" (1863) 318."
