(8 SEP 1820 - )
From "The Studebaker Family in America - 1736-1976"; by Walter CARLOCK, Alvin Girard FAUST and E. Irene MILLER; 1976; page 174 in part:
"Farmers. He was apprenticed at age 12 to his Uncle and Aunt, David and Hannah Studebaker PUTERBAUGH to learn farming.
'He moved from Delaware Co., IN to Chase Co., KS in 1855 (possibly as early as 1854) in the "Ulrich" party, a convoy of 10 covered wagons. Jay W. STUDEBAKER, grandson of Abraham, states that he believes the convoy moved in 1854 as Kansas was not yet a state. The North was trying to get northern people to settle and make it a northern state, and southern people were trying to make it a southern state. Quantrell and his outlaws were raiding the Missouri border and were killing northern people. The children were instructed to say they were traveling to western Missouri. When they got to Fort Scott, the soldiers escorted them on to Kansas territory.
'Abraham and Rachel STUDEBAKER and their family settled on the Cottonwood River 10 miles west of Emporia, KS. Rachel's brother, Henry JACOBS, and family settled 10 miles south of there on what is now known as Jacobs Creek. Near Jacobs Creek is a high mound called Jacobs Mound. Bothe the creek and the mound are named for the Jacobs."
