Notes
Occupation
According to family tradition, Israel Timothy Alden worked on the Erie Canal, moving barges and ferries. During this time, it is believed he may have been living with his sister, Elmira, and her husband/cousin in Medina, Ohio (source: Ancestry posting by Eric Hanson (UK) on 2/23/2002, shared by Jason Kurt on 11/19/2010).Property
Israel Timothy Alden is cited as first arriving in the Leaf River township of Ogle County, Illinois, in 1855, according to an 1872 county atlas. However, census records indicate he lived in Ogle County, Illinois, as early as 1850.Residence
Israel Alden's income was valued at $1,120.00 with a special tax due of $56.00.Residence
Israel Alden was assessed for taxes on his income, valued at $2,160, and a carriage, valued at $50, for a total of $109.00 owed in taxes.Residence
Israel Alden was assessed for taxes on an income of $2,251 with $112.55 owed in taxes.Property
Israel Timothy Alden owned two farms in the Leaf River Township, Ogle County, Illinois, in 1872, according to an atlas of Leaf River published in that year - in Sections 17 and 31, respectively. As illustrated in the map volume, the farm in Section 17 was 400 acres in size and contained a two-story residence with a t-shaped plan, large bank barn, fenced orchard and gardens, horse pasture, and duck pond. The atlas provides a graphic illustration of the farm, which appears to match the extant farm in Section 17 on the west side of N. Pecotonica Road, just south of its intersection with W. Myrtle Road and an abandoned railroad alignment (see: https://goo.gl/maps/X7gkDerDzeD2). It is unclear if/when Israel Timothy Alden owned this property, or if he leased it, as the land ownership map included in the volume shows suggests that the owner of the property in 1872 is a William Palmer. The map confirms Alden's ownership of property in Section 31, including a farm. This farm also appears to remain extant (see: https://goo.gl/maps/QaPA8oYjFR42).Residence
Israel Timothy Alden is recorded as living with his wife, Hannah Alden, and son, Fredrick Israel Alden (age 23) in 1885. The census mistakenly records Israel with the last name Peterson, and records Fredrick Israel by his initials rather than his full name.Probate
Israel Alden's Will was entered into the county records on May 26, 1892, following his death. It stipulated that all of his property be bequeathed to his daughter, Hannah Rosa (or Rosetta) Wilson, wife of David Wilson of Illinois. The will was witnessed by W. D. Evans and H. P. Roberts.Probate records also show that Israel's wife, Hannah, filed a suit to have the expenses of Israel's funeral paid for out of his estate (source: Ancestry posting by Eric Hanson (UK) on 2/23/2002, shared by Jason Kurt on 11/19/2010).
