Elam was a Confederate in the Civil War with the 8th Missouri Cavalry
with Colenel William Jeffers regiment of Marmaduke's Brigade. He enlisted
September 21, 1862 and was discharged June 8, 1865. His second wife was on
her way to a neighbor's house to care for the sick there when she was overcome
with the heat and died of heart failure by the roadside.
