Individual Details
(27 Sep 1757 - Sep 1804)
When he left Germany Johannes was a farmer in a good financial state. In May of 1804 John and his family set out for the USA of America, boarding a ship at Amsterdam. The voyage occupied nearly five months, the ship having been carried by storms to the region of the West Indies, and there was stranded for several weeks, due to lack of winds, During which time a tropic fever broke out on shipboard and many of the passengers died, among them Johanne Bierer. His widow and three sons landed at Baltimore, Maryland, around the first of October, then traveled west crossing the mountains on foot to Greensburg, Westmoreland , Pennsylvania. Their troubles continued; as a trusted friend of their father had been authorized to receive and remit some deferred payments, amounting to about one- half of the price, of the German homestead, but instead of remitting the money, he embezzled and kept it, leaving the family with scanty funds to start their new life. Her sons John M. Bierer and Frederick Bierer became butchers in Greensburg and her son Everhart carried on butchering in Connellsville, Pennsylvania for some time until in the spring of 1817 when he moved to Uniontown where he followed his occupation as a cattle dealer and butcher until 1849. He was succeeded in the b utchering business by his sons. John Bierer was from the town of Wiernsheim, in the Wurttemberg area of Germany. He married Barbara Muller, who was claimed to be three generations removed from the King of Prussia, Frederick the Great. The Wurttemberg area of Germany had aligned itself with Sweden and France against Prussia. As a result of this connection with Frederick the Great's family, John Bierer was expelled from the army, and eventually found it best to quit the country.
