Pleasant L. Wingo was the first of three of James T. Wingo's sons to meet with a violent death. He was shot to death with his own gun, a double barrel muzzle loading shot gun. His second wife, Lucinda Vaughn Elliston, said she killed Pleasant in self defense, but there were those who doubted her story. To the doubters she was a "bad woman", and they believed that a man she was seeing actually shot Pleasant when he came home unexpectedly and caught the man in the house with Lucy. They theorized that the man had grabbed Pleasant's gun from its rack on the wall and shot him. Regardless of who did the shooting, Pleasant's brains were literally blown out. People who went to the scene of the tragedy gave accounts of Pleasant's brains having fried on the top of a nearby stove, and one of their children, a crawling baby, having some of the brains in its mouth. The killing took place in a house in back of Frank Tate's log house on Dividing Ridge Road. The house in which Pleasant was killed was used as a hay barn in later years and Frank Tate's house burned. In 1986 Noah Ferrill Wingo told Tracy Robb that the man suspected of shooting Pleasant was Jim Tate.
