Source: History of Spartanburg County by Dr. J. B. O. Landrum
"John Wingo, known as 'Fifer John,' married Margaret Thompson and had nine children, viz.: Allen, who married a Miss. Brice and went to Georgia; James, who married a Miss Brice and went to Alabama; John, who never married and died out West; Lewis, who married Miss Edwards and went to Illinois, where he died; Mahala, who married David Bettis; Polly, who married Henry Wood, and who died in Tennessee; Betsy, who was a cripple and never married; and Rebecca who married Simpson Lowe, near Fair Forrest, S. C. She has recently died.

John or 'Fifer John" John Wingo was born in Spartanburg County, and died about the year 1895, in the ninety-first year of his age. He was a quiet law-abiding citizen, a soldier of the war of 1812, and an exemplary member of Nazareth (Presbyterian) Church, where in the cemetery his remains repose."

"John Wingo died at residence of his grandson, Mr. W. A Lowe on the 22'nd of February in his 91st year. His better days answered to the description of the adage in the 12th Chapter of Ecclesiastes: "Long life is promised to such as fear God and keep His Commandments, That thy days shall be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shall ee thy children's children."
He had nine children, four are dead; five, three daughters and two sons, are now living in many different states. He leaves thirty grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. "The children of their servants shall continue and their seed be established before Thee."
He was born and lived out his days in Spartanburg County, a quite, law abiding citizen, a soldier of the War of 1812.
He united with the Nazareth Presbyterian Church in 1845 and lived to death a consistant, devoted member. This vernerable old church, now in the 107th year of its organized existance, was the dearest place on earth to his heart. He had no other home in this world. Old and infirm, he walked seven miles last October to be present at the communion services.
His remains were brought to the church on the Sabbath in February for interment just as the congregation were beginning to assemble for public worship. May his descendants remember and profit by his example."
